Mellow Yellow at Green Spring Gardens

The number of days for outdoor flower photography are dwindling in the Mid Atlantic Region of the U.S., so it was time to take one final trip to Green Spring Gardens in Alexandria, Va. before the more seasonal weather moves in. (please see below for second photos and more text)

The day these photos were taken started as a sunny one. The clouds moved in as the morning drew to a close.  I thought it would be fun to use a strobe on some of the close ups I was shooting, including the one above of a yellow flower. On an overcast day such as this one, a muted strobe helps bring out the color and hues this flower has to offer.

Green Spring, tucked away behind an office park and a car dealership, in my opinion is the best place to photograph flowers in Northern Virginia.  Even deep in to the autumn season, there are still flowers to photograph. The park never seems to be too crowded and there is plenty of parking. The park even allows leashed dogs.  The staff and an army of local volunteers do an incredible job of keeping up the gardens. Oh, and did I mention, there is no admission fee.

All three of these photos were taken with a 60mm Macro and a strobe with diffuser on it.
