River Shore Charters runs a wonderful boat tour of the Occoquan River every Saturday and Sunday that leaves from Occoquan Regional Park in Lorton, Va., which is located directly across the river from the heart of the quaint town of Occoquan.
The boats captain tells stories of the river’s history and points out several different birds along the way, including many Osprey who next along the Occoquan.
The Occoquan is a tributary of the Potomac River and also part of the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The river is close to 25 miles long. The town of Occoquan is 25 miles from Washington D.C.
We went on this mini voyage about a year ago. There are a lot of osprey on the Occoquan. There are osprey nests built on some very high poles in the river. I shot this frame as one of the birds took off from the elevated nest. Quite an impressive bird.
