A raccoon goes fishing on the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge in Virginia

When most people think of Chincoteague, they think of the famous wild ponies. The ponies though  are just part of an amazing  ecosystem at Chincoteague. Wildlife on the island includes (but is not limited to) a variety of birds, deer and of course critters like our friend shown above, raccoons.

This photo was taken during my first trip to the island in May of 2012. My wife and I were cruising the main road that runs thru the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge in the late afternoon.

The light was perfect. Lots of saturated greens reflecting in the  waterway that runs along the road.  As we drove looking for birds and  ponies, my wife exclaimed, ” look, a raccoon!”

I quickly started shooting out the car window as the raccoon continued to  fish for its dinner (or maybe it was a late lunch.) The animal seemed pretty intent on what it was doing and did not pay much attention to me.

Chincoteague  is a nature photographers wonderland and never disappoints.  I cannot wait to our next trip to the refuge.
