When I put up a bird feeder I am always reminded of the famous line from the baseball movie “Field of Dreams” : “if you will build it, he will come” In my case, I am not always thinking about birds but the nemesis of the birds and my dogs, Mr. S.Q. (please see second photo and more text below)
The more I study the behavior of squirrels the more I respect their cunning and daring nature.
They always seem to be in motion.
Take the squirrel shown in these photos. He/she has now figured out a new way to our porch feeders. He follows the route taken by the birds and crawls up a very slim branch before jumping to the feeder. How he keeps his much heavier body from pushing the branch down and falling off, who knows?
After taking his leap of faith he somehow hangs upside down on the feeder snagging every morsel he can before slipping and falling about 15 feet from the railing to the ground. He then dusts himself off and makes the same trip 30 minutes later.
If we were all that persistent…

LOL I love squirrels! They are adorable. But yes I agree that they are very daring and will go the extra mile for food. I even created a comic strip with photos I took a squirrel I chanced upon in London. =P
