Fall Fireworks at Deep Creek Lake (MD)

fall fireworks Rob Paine The opening ceremonies of the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships /Deep Creek 2014 held in McHenry, Md., late last month included a fantastic fireworks display. I am used to the summer displays at dusk but this dramatic show began after 9 p.m. long after dusk had departed. (please see more text and photos below)
We pulled off onto a scenic view spot that over looks WISP and the lake. There was not even a streetlight nearby. It was pitch black dark with some occasional light from the headlights of passing cars.  I depended on  the light from my car’s trunk so I could set up my tripod.

Every year there is a slightly longer fireworks show at Deep Creek Lake on July 4th. The scenic pull off spot we drove into 20 minutes before the show started would have been filled and reserved at least 12 hours prior if it had been Independence Day.

The mountains did a nice job of framing the fabulous light show.
