This is a look-back post that ran a year ago this week filled with photos taken at one of my favorite places, The National Aviary in Pittsburgh. I have updated the dates for this year’s (2014) commemoration.

This weekend,  Oct. 11-12 is  African Penguin Awareness Weekend at the National Aviary in Pittsburgh where special  programs are being held to celebrate. The official day set worldwide for this  special day is Oct. 11, 2014. 

The National Aviary in Pittsburgh is home to Penguin Point, an open air exhibit where you can get an up close and personal view of  African Penguins.

The Aviary’s Web site says the following about Penguin Point : “Penguin Point, presented by Trib Total Media, is home to the National Aviary’s 16 African Penguins. This $1.7 million immersive exhibit transports visitors to the rocky shores of South Africa to experience the sights, sounds (and smells!) of a real penguin colony.”
The day of my last visit was a cloudy one, making for perfect lighting conditions for the contrasty black and white birds. (please see below for more photos)

The Penguins all have names, Bette, Bo, Diana, Dottie, Elvis, Kaden, Kristen, Owen, Patrick, Preston, Sidney, Simon, Stanley, Spencer, TJ, and Tribby. According to the aviary, the penguins share their habitat with two South African shelducks: Patty and Selma. (One of the shelducks, a very beautiful bird, is shown in the photo at the bottom of this post.)
