I shot this photo in the town of Washington, Va., a month or two after the September 11 in 2001. Washington, Va., (more commonly referred to as “Little Washington”) is in Rappahannock County, about 70 miles from the nation’s capital. It is in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. (please see more text and second photo below)
The country was experiencing a rebirth of patriotism in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks. U.S. flags were everywhere. I liked this scene as it had a very american feel to it but it was not overwhelming. This home has a classic look. The photo was shot late on a Saturday afternoon. The manner in which the light brought out the yellow in the house was very striking.
The sun seemed to spotlight the flag, making it the highlight of the photo.
Little Washington is full of history. The town was originally surveyed by none other than George Washington, who later became the first president of the United States.
The photo at left is of the Rappahannock County Historical Society. Little Washington is located just off Virginia Route 211,not too far from Warrenton, Va.
