The Deep Creek Lake Area is full of nostalgia. Visiting Garrett County is a throwback of sorts to a much different time and place where life was a little bit slower and simpler. In Oakland,  the Garrett County seat, located less than 10 miles from the lake, you can each lunch at an old 5 and Dime counter and buy fresh fruit and vegetables at the weekly farmers market.

Behind the station you will see this sculpted iron fence that keeps visitors from straying onto the nearby tracks. I shot this photo with  a 200MM lens so I could use the fence gate to frame the fall colors.

You can also visit the train museum in the town’s restored train station where this photo was taken.
During your visit, be sure to visit the Garrett County Museum of Transportation which is across the street from the train station.

Below is another thing you are not likely to see on a big city street corner, a campfire wood/night crawler store which has not attendant and is operates under the honor system.  The writing under the mirror at left reads : “Honest Face or Face of a Thief? Your Choice”
