My dad, more than anyone else, had the greatest influence on me becoming a photographer. When I was growing up, he always took a camera along on both family vacations and on business trips. He never shot professionally, but many of his photos were of professional caliber. He loved windows, shooting through windows or just using them as frames. It was a photography fundamental that always stuck with me, such as the time I took this photograph in Accident, Md.
The small town of Accident holds a great Independence Day celebration each each year that includes a parade, a crafts fair and cookout with music.
The town also opens up the historic Drane House located in Accident. The Drane House built in 1798 is believed to be the oldest standing structure in Garrett County. The Town of Accident in 1987 reconstructed and preserved the house on its original site. It is in excellent condition.
During our tour I noticed how the window so nicely framed the pasture that surrounds the house. As luck would have it and not by accident, a horse strolled by the window, walking right behind the far left frame of the window, presenting me with a great photo opportunity.
Using framing effectively can add extra depth and interest to any photo. In this image, the framing also added a sense of place.
I have been back to Accident many times since, photographing perhaps the same horse in front of another barn next to the Drane House.
